I have been asked SO often what the best supplies to use for hand-lettering are; so what better way than to share links to my favorite items with you all? These items I am sharing today are some of my most frequent go-to options from Amazon (because who doesn’t love Amazon shopping, right?). Let’s break it down and get into it!
First things first: practice!
Before you can dive into hand-lettering on signs or larger items, you have to begin with a lot of practice. Here are my go-to practice supplies:
- Paper Mate Flair Felt Tip Pens: Medium Point: These are my FAVORITE every day pens to use, and I practice with these frequently too. I use these in my notebooks, planners, cards, thank you notes, etc!
- Paper Mate Flair Felt Tip All Black Pens: I bought these as well to have a set of black pens, as I use these most often. This is a pack of 36 and will last SO long!
- Variety Size Calligraphy Pens: A great set of calligraphy pens perfect for beginners. There are 8 different sizes to practice styles of writing. The key to hand-lettering is finding what works best for you and getting comfortable with new techniques.
- Great Calligraphy Pens and Drawing Pens: This set it a little larger and has finer point options that are perfect for drawing as well! I love this for small details I like to include in my drawings.
- Calligraphy Pad/Sketchbook: If you want to really get the feel for calligraphy, this is a great sketchbook to use!
- Sketchbook: Of course, a regular sketchbook works beautifully as well for practice, and this one is wonderful. Great quality for any artwork.
- Ruler: You also need a ruler as well! Any will work, but here is a link to one in case you need a new one.
Moving on to the Real Thing… Supplies for Signs!
If you are ready to take the next step and hand-letter on signs and larger items, I’ve got you covered! Here are some of the items I use every single day to create my art pieces.
- Sharpie Oil-Based Paint Markers: Black – Medium Size: When I say these are my go-to markers, I mean they are on almost every piece I create! I use Sharpie oil-based on all wood signs and items. The black is my staple, as it shows up so well every single time!
- Sharpie Oil-Based Paint Markers: Assorted Colors – Medium Size: I have used this set for so long, as it has all the basic colors.
- Medium-Size: Includes Black, Red, White, Silver, & Gold: Another set of Sharpie oil-based, but this one also includes silver and gold, which always add the perfect pop to any piece!
- Bold Point – Set of Black Paint Markers & Bold Point – Set of White Paint Markers: The bold point is the size I use on all larger signs. Both the black and white show up so well!
- Fine Point – Set of Black Paint Markers: The fine point are used on smaller lettering I do on signs.
- Various Colors Fine Point Set: This set has also been a staple for me, as it has so many bright colors in it!
- Extra Fine Point Oil-Based Paint Markers – Black, Extra Fine Point Oil-Based Paint Markers – Silver, Extra Fine Point Oil-Based Paint Markers – White: These are the smallest point and what I use for all detailed outlining. I outline drawings when needed, as well as use these for the smallest lettering I do.
- 12 Inch Wood Circles: For signs, I personally get most from Hobby Lobby or Michaels, as I just love the material of theirs. However, these round signs from Amazon work so well if you’re looking to make a welcome sign or any round project!
- Acrylic Paint Set: For drawings and lettering needing colors I don’t have in markers, this is such a great acrylic paint set! I have come to love this brand, as well as Master’s Touch from Hobby Lobby. The set in the link just gives such beautiful color options!
Of course, there are many more options out there to use as well, but these are what I have personally found to be helpful in my hand-lettering journey! I hope this is helpful as you take the next step in your adventure. I am here to help, so feel free to message me or email me with any questions at any time!
As always, thanks for being here, and thanks for being you ๐ Happy hand-lettering!
